Syrian Defense Minister Demands End to Israeli Military Actions

By Rizik Alabi / The Media Line

Syrian Defense Minister Gen. Murhaf Abu Qasra has called on Israel to halt its military operations in Syria, marking his first official statement since taking office. Abu Qasra emphasized Syria’s commitment to reclaiming sovereignty, accusing Israel of escalating violations in southern Syria over recent months. His remarks also highlighted the government’s efforts to unify military factions under the Defense Ministry to establish a national army that represents all Syrians.

Abu Qasra’s statement follows reports of increased Israeli military actions near Damascus. Local sources have claimed that Israeli forces, including soldiers, bulldozers, and tanks, advanced into the village of Badda near Mezzeh Air Base. The operation allegedly involved road construction and excavation, resulting in extensive damage to agricultural lands. Additionally, reports indicate that Israel has converted the Quneitra Governorate building in Madinat al-Salam into a military base, signaling deeper entrenchment in the region.

The Golan Heights, a strategic area seized by Israel during the 1967 war and later annexed in 1981, remains a focal point of contention. Despite the annexation not being recognized internationally, Israel has reportedly expanded its influence in buffer zones near Quneitra, especially after the weakening of Syria’s central government. Syrian military experts argue that such actions undermine the 1974 UN-brokered Agreement on Disengagement established after the October War of 1973.

Abu Qasra also underscored Syria’s plans to conclude negotiations with the Syrian Democratic Forces to form a unified military. He stated that the Syrian Army would serve as a symbol of the nation rather than a tool of repression. Analysts hope these efforts can stabilize Syria internally, though Israeli incursions and regional tensions remain significant hurdles.

The international community, including the United Nations and several Arab countries, has condemned Israel’s recent actions in Syria, urging restraint. Syria’s ability to navigate these challenges under Abu Qasra’s leadership will determine its capacity to rebuild sovereignty and achieve internal unity.
