Lindor homers as Mets stop Dodgers’ scoreless streak in 7-3 win, head to NY with NLCS tied 1-1

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos homered as the New York Mets stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ record-tying postseason scoreless streak in a 7-3 victory, tying the NL Championship Series at a game apiece. Lindor added to his storybook season with a leadoff homer in the first inning against Ryan Brasier. Viento delivered during New York’s five-run second, connecting for a grand slam against Landon Knack. Before Lindor went deep, Los Angeles had a string of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Jack Flaherty led the Dodgers to a 9-0 victory in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attend Game 1 of ALCS at Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK (AP) — Turns out, Taylor and Travis like to watch a little baseball, too. Pop superstar Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, were at Yankee Stadium for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series between the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees. The famous couple sat together in a suite down the right-field line. Kelce went to high school in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. It was the second major sporting event they’ve attended in New York City over the past five-plus weeks. The couple also sat in a box to watch the men’s final at the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Sept. 8 in Queens.

Dodgers pitchers’ record-tying streak of 33 straight scoreless innings in playoffs ends in NLCS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers’ streak of 33 consecutive scoreless innings in the playoffs has ended. Ryan Brasier gave up a leadoff home run to Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets in the first inning of Game 2. Lindor connected on a 2-2 pitch to right field, a 395-foot shot that gave the Mets a 1-0 lead. The Dodgers went with a bullpen game on Monday. Brasier was the first of multiple relievers who were set to pitch. Dodgers pitchers tied the postseason record of 33 consecutive scoreless innings in a 9-0 rout in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

Kansas tops AP Top 25 preseason men’s basketball poll ahead of Alabama, defending champion UConn

Kansas is No. 1 in the AP Top 25 preseason men’s basketball poll ahead of Alabama and two-time defending national champion UConn. The Jayhawks got 30 of 60 first-place votes while the Crimson Tide received 14 and the Huskies got 11. Houston and Iowa State round out the top five, followed by Gonzaga, Duke, Baylor, North Carolina and Arizona. The Big 12 has half of the top 10 teams but the SEC has the most in the Top 25 overall with nine. That includes No. 16 Arkansas, led by new coach John Calipari, and No. 23 Kentucky, where Mark Pope replaced him.

Aidan Hutchinson likely down 4-6 months with broken leg, Lions coach Dan Campbell says

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had successful surgery to repair a fractured tibia and fibula he sustained against the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions announced Monday morning that Hutchinson had the surgery at Baylor White Medical Center in the Dallas area. He will return to Detroit this week and was expected to make a full recovery. Hutchinson was carted off the field after a sack of Dallas QB Dak Prescott in the third quarter of the Lions’ 47-9 win over the Cowboys on Sunday. Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that the surgery “went great” and Hutchinson is likely out four-to-six months.

Kershaw says he plans to return to Dodgers for 18th season in 2025

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw says he plans to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for his 18th season next year. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner isn’t pitching in the current playoffs because of a bone spur in his left big toe that sidelined him for the final month of the regular season. The 36-year-old left-hander made just seven starts this year, going 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA, which were both career lows. Last November, Kershaw had left shoulder surgery and the recovery kept him out of action until July 25. By the end of August, he was on the injured list with the toe injury. He says he’s going to come back next year “and give it a go and see how it goes.”

Hendrick Motorsports declines to appeal Alex Bowman’s disqualification from NASCAR playoffs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Hendrick Motorsports says it will not appeal Alex Bowman’s disqualification at Charlotte Motor Speedway that eliminated him from NASCAR title contention. Bowman finished Sunday’s race at The Roval in 18th-place — high enough to eliminate Joey Logano of Team Penske from the playoff field by four points. But NASCAR said the No. 48 Chevrolet failed a post-race inspection and disqualified Bowman for failing to meet minimum weight requirements. It dropped him to 38th and Logano claimed that spot in the playoff field. Hendrick had the right to appeal but said in a statement it would not.

NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Rizzo was back in the New York Yankees’ lineup for the American League Championship Series opener, just 16 days after fracturing a pair of fingers when hit by a pitch. Rizzo was batting eighth and playing first base versus the Cleveland Guardians after missing the Division Series against Kansas City. Rizzo fractured the fourth and fifth fingers on his right hand when hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh’s Ryan Borucki on Sept. 28.

Weekend full of injuries in college football leaves plenty of playoff contenders scrambling

Plenty of playoff contenders suddenly find themselves dealing with major injuries to notable players as the college football season reaches its halfway point. Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison, Tennessee linebacker Keenan Pili and Texas defensive back Derrick Williams are out for the rest of the season. Ohio State left tackle Josh Simmons also has an injury that could end his season. All went down as part of a brutal weekend that included Florida quarterback Graham Mertz and Colorado State receiver Tory Horton undergoing season-ending injuries and Utah quarterback Cam Rising suffering a lower leg injury that has him out indefinitely.

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh wearing heart monitor, taking blood thinner after irregular heartbeat

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Leave it to Jim Harbaugh to call an audible when addressing his health. The Los Angeles Chargers coach wasn’t supposed to do his Monday news conference because he was undergoing medical testing after he experienced an irregular heartbeat during Sunday’s 23-16 win at Denver. Harbaugh, though, got back from his appointment with a cardiologist earlier than planned. He spoke to reporters and said he is taking steps to address the arrhythmia he has had for many years. That includes wearing a heart monitor for the next two weeks and taking a blood thinner so his heart doesn’t go out of rhythm.
