Train Collision in Egypt Kills One, Injures 20

By The Media Line Staff

A passenger train bound for Cairo collided with another train on Sunday, killing one person and injuring at least 20, according to Egyptian officials. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The crash, the second major railway accident in Egypt this month, occurred in Minya province, about 168 miles (270 kilometers) south of Cairo.

Egypt’s railway authority reported that the collision caused two carriages to derail and fall into nearby water. Footage shared by local media showed the carriages partially submerged.

The Health Ministry stated that 19 of the injured individuals were discharged after receiving medical treatment.

Egypt, home to more than 111 million people, often faces train accidents due to its underfunded and overcrowded railway infrastructure. Last month, a train collision in the Nile Delta region killed three passengers.

In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said the country’s deteriorating rail system would need an estimated 250 billion Egyptian pounds (about $8.13 billion) to modernize and prevent further accidents.
